Tanzanian men runners showcased their endurance and talent at the Kilimanjaro International Marathon, which was held last Sunday in Moshi, by claiming top positions.
More than 15,000 local and foreign runners took part in the 23rd Edition of the marathon.
Hamis Athumani emerged victorious in the men’s 42-kilometre race, crossing the finish line in 2 hours, 20 minutes, and 45 seconds. He was closely followed by fellow Tanzanian Aloyce Simbu, who secured second place with a time of 2:21:17. Kenya’s Abraham Kipkosgei took third place, clocking in at 2:24:12.

In the women’s 42-kilometre category, Kenyan Jacinta Chepkoech dominated the race, finishing in 2:45:39. The second-place spot went to Rwandan Agnes Musabyimana with a time of 3:00:49, while Tanzania’s Neema Sanka also completed the marathon in 3:00:49, securing third place in a dramatic finish.
For years, Kenyan athletes have dominated the 42-kilometre race, but Tanzania’s increasing presence on the podium signals the country’s re-growing strength in long-distance running.
Tanzanian athletes also excelled in the 21-kilometre half marathon. Inyasi Sule secured first place in the men’s category, finishing in 1:17:37, while Failana Matanga claimed victory in the women’s race with the same time of 1:17:37.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Dotto Biteko, underscored the significance of the Kilimanjaro Marathon in promoting tourism and sports development in Tanzania.
Deputy Prime Minister Dotto Biteko emphasized the importance of nurturing athletic talent in Tanzania.
He urged the ministries of tourism and sports to collaborate with event organizers to further elevate the marathon’s impact.
“The Kilimanjaro Marathon is not just a sporting event; it is a platform to showcase Tanzania’s beauty and potential. I encourage all participants and visitors to explore our country’s breathtaking tourist attractions,” Biteko said.
He also implored the importance of an active lifestyle, urging marathon participants to continue exercising regularly beyond the race.
“I encourage all athletes and citizens to embrace daily exercise to combat non-communicable diseases and maintain overall health. A nutritious diet is also crucial for a healthy life,” he added.
