ONE YEAR ON: ZEPHANIA UBWANI’S JOURNALISTIC SPIRIT LIVES ON

TOn April 6, 2025, the journalism fraternity marked a year since the passing of seasoned journalist Zephania Ubwani, whose contributions to media and storytelling in Northern Tanzania remain unmatched.

Starting his career humbly as a tea boy at the government-owned Tanzania News Agency (SHIHATA), Ubwani’s passion for journalism quickly took over, leading to a career that spanned over 30 years.

Known for his crisp, factual, and fearless writing, he worked with several media houses, notably serving as the Arusha Bureau Chief for the Nation Media Group (NMG).

Ubwani’s expertise covered diverse fields including politics, public policy, environment, and regional integration. He was a walking encyclopedia on issues regarding the East African Community (EAC).

He mentored many young journalists, generously sharing his wisdom while remaining humble and approachable.

Ubwani died on duty in April 2024, after collapsing at Palace Hotel in Arusha while on assignment. He was 71 years old.

Born among the Barbaig pastoral community, he was laid to rest at the foothills of Mount Hanang, survived by his widow Mary Ubwani and four children.

His death was a monumental loss to journalism, but his legacy lives on as a shining example of dedication, humility, and passion for truth.
