Social security is a crucial system that every citizen should understand — especially in a growing economy like Tanzania.
In Tanzania, the system ensures income security and access to healthcare, especially during old age, sickness, disability, unemployment, work injury, maternity, or the death of a wage earner.
There are two main systems in Tanzania:
- Social Insurance Schemes like NSSF (National Social Security Fund) and PSSSF (Public Service Social Security Fund), where members contribute during their working years.
- Social Assistance Schemes, which are non-contributory and funded by the government through programs like TASAF.
The importance of social security lies in its ability to provide financial protection for vulnerable members of society. It ensures people do not fall into poverty due to circumstances beyond their control.
In Tanzania, the law governing social security includes the Social Security Act, covering both NSSF and PSSSF.
The International Labour Organisation (ILO) describes social security as a basic human right, vital in promoting equality and human dignity.
Knowing your rights and obligations regarding social security is essential in securing your future.
