TRIBUTE: REMEMBERING STEPHEN LAISER

By Peter Lindstrom

Stephen recently completed his circle of life.

Arusha-based Hoopoe Safaris hosted the U.S. President Bill Clinton (second left) on his Tanzania philanthropic tour in 2015. Others in the picture are, from right, Peter Lindstrom, the late Stephen Laiser (second right), and Rupert Hatton (left). The late Laiser and Lindstrom initiated Hoopoe Safaris.

He leaves behind a loving family, along with many friends and acquaintances.

His life was well lived, and he successfully overcame life’s challenges to become not only a prosperous businessman but also a proponent of the “common good”.

His most enduring legacy, as a man of God, was the inspiration behind the construction of the beautiful ELCT Church in Sekei.

It was fitting that so many, thousands in fact—many having travelled from afar, but times of no foot—came to bid him a final farewell.

Stephen was well-known for his integrity and for being “a man of the people.”

He engaged with many leaders in our society but was equally comfortable with those from more humble beginnings, always ready to help those in need without hesitation.

Starting from humble origins, he demonstrated that through hard work, anything is possible.

He was selfless, and many residents of Manyara benefited from his ability to raise funds and provide help for village development projects.

These projects included fresh, safe water supplies, health support through a village clinic, and the provision of educational infrastructure such as classrooms.

As a mentor and an inspiration, Stephen was greatly respected by his long-serving employees at Hoopoe and Kirurumu Under Canvas.

He was recognised by the Tourism Industry for his role in making the company a role model for sustainable Community-Based Tourism.

Stephen faced life’s illness that ended his life with characteristic courage until the final curtain was drawn.

His legacy will live on for generations.

Those from near and far who met him on his journey through life will never forget him and will cherish his memory.
