AICC issues eviction notices to Kijenge tenants

tenants to ensure their belongings are removed and the premises are vacated by the specified date. The notice further requests tenants to settle any outstanding rent payments by December 31, 2024. “Please make sure that all your belongings are removed and that the property is vacated by the specificied date,” the notice reads dated 5th November, 2024. However, some tenants have expressed disappointment with the short two-month notice. Mr Leopold Kabendera, a tenant there for 28 years, voiced his concern about the timeline. “We are not against the termination of tenancy, but the short notice given to us. We are simply requesting an extension to at least six months. There should be some humanitarian consideration to allow families time to secure alternative accommodations,” he said while recognising the value of national development in the area. The eviction notice is reportedly tied to the anticipated construction of the mega Kilimanjaro Convention Centre and a five-star hotel, projects aimed at enhancing Arusha’s status as a regional and international hub for conference, tourism and business events. These developments are expected to accommodate major upcoming events, including the World Beekeeping Conference and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals, both of which are anticipated to draw significant activity and demand for accommodation and meeting facilities.
