EAC Partner States have approved the EAC Regional Health Data Governance Framework which is a major milestone in the region’s efforts to improve cross-border health data sharing. The framework aims to create a secure, seamless environment for sharing health data across the East African Community (EAC) with a strong focus on data protection, privacy and security. Announcing the development during a recent workshop, EAC Senior Health Informatics Officer Eng Andrew Kajeguka, speaking on behalf of EAC Principal Health Officer Dr Eric Nzeyimana, emphasised the region’s significant progress in digital health. He noted that the new framework will be instrumental in advancing regional health cooperation and facilitating secure data exchanges between EAC member states. The three-day workshop brought together supply chain experts, ICT professionals and key stakeholders from across the EAC. Participants were trained on using a newly developed digital tool designed to enhance access to health commodities while improving the management and security of health data. Eng Kajeguka revealed that the framework was developed with the support of international partners, including the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida), the German Development Bank (KfW) and USAID. He highlighted that this initiative is part of a broader effort to harmonize health data governance across the region, ensuring that health information is shared efficiently while upholding the highest standards of security and privacy.
