EAC to celebrate 25years of regional integration

The East African Community (EAC) will celebrate its 25th anniversary on 30 November 2024, at its headquarters in Arusha. This historic milestone marks a quarter-century since the signing of the Treaty for the Establishment of the EAC on November 30, 1999, by the founding Partner States—Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda. The Treaty officially came into force on July 7, 2000, re-establishing the regional bloc. To celebrate the Silver Jubilee, a week-long series of activities, including exhibitions and seminars, has been planned, culminating in the EAC Summit of the Heads of State. According to the organizers, a special task force has been formed to oversee the grand celebrations. Over the past 25 years, the EAC has expanded its membership to eight Partner States–Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Somalia. The Community has achieved significant progress in regional integration, particularly through its key pillars: The Customs Union, Common Market, Monetary Union and the ultimate goal of Political Federation. As part of the preparations for the celebrations, EAC Secretary General, Ms Veronica Nduva, recently met with President Salva Kiir, Chairperson of the EAC Heads of State Summit, in Juba. Discussions centered on plans for the anniversary and other key issues, including the potential review of the Treaty to address current challenges facing the bloc.
