Kilimanjaro police swoop 200 suspects

Police booked 211 suspects on various charges during surveillance patrols in the Kilimanjaro region in the last three months.

The Regional Police Commander (RPC), Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Simon Maigwa, told a press conference in Moshi that 114 suspects were found with cannabis and khat; 82 were booked for illicit liquor brewing and possession of brewing equipment; 25 were found with stolen properties, six were illegal immigrants, and seven suspects were found with government trophies.

The RPC said the defendants were brought to court where 90 of them were convicted and are currently serving prison terms ranging from 20 years to life imprisonment, while others were fined.

RPC Maigwa said that during the three-month period, Kilimanjaro region recorded two road accidents compared to nine reported for the same period in the previous year.

“The region has ranked third nationally in proper use of the passenger vehicle speed control system (VTS), with 12 drivers having their licences revoked due to road safety violations during the period,” he said.
