The Arusha-based Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) has been named the “cleanest” higher learning institution in the country in a 2024 Health and Clean Environment Competition.
Vice-Chancellor, Prof Maulilio Kipanyula, said the achievement reflected the institution’s commitment and dedication to fostering a clean, healthy and motivational academic atmosphere.
Organised by the Ministry of Health as part of the 2025 National Health Week celebrations, the competition aimed at raising public awareness on health and environmental sanitation in Tanzania. A total of 19 universities participated in the competition.
“Tanzania is among the most (naturally) beautiful countries in the world. We must take pride in keeping our institutions, streets, homes and natural surroundings clean,” Prof Kipanyula told The Arusha News.
The award ceremony took place recently at the Jakaya Kikwete Convention Centre (JKCC) in Dodoma. The Minister for Health, Ms Jenista Mhagama (MP), presented the prizes. NM-AIST received a cash prize of Sh 4.0 million, a trophy and a certificate.
