The Bank of Tanzania (BoT) has officially announced that today, April 5, 2025, is the last day to use old Tanzanian shilling banknotes as legal tender.
The banknotes to be withdrawn are in denominations of 20, 200, 500, 1,000, 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000 shillings, issued from 1985 to 2003 and 500 banknotes issued in 2010.
Starting from January 6, 2025, there was a phase-out period during which these old notes could be deposited or exchanged at banks and financial institutions.
