Arusha, Tanzania’s tourism hub, will be brimming with activities from Monday as it hosts this year’s National Women’s Day celebrations on March 8. President Samia Suluhu Hassan is expected to grace the event as the chief guest and will address the public from the Sheikh Amri Abeid Stadium.

The Minister for Community Development, Gender, Women, and Special Groups, Dr. Dorothy Gwajima, told reporters early this week that all preparations were in place for the much-awaited event. The celebrations, she added, would highlight both the gains and ongoing challenges in gender equality and women’s empowerment in the country. The theme of this year is: “Women and Girls 2025: Strengthen Rights, Equality, and Empowerment.”

“The climax (March 8) will be preceded by a variety of activities including symposia, processions, business exhibitions by women entrepreneurs, a sports bonanza, and various entertainment activities aimed at promoting women’s visibility in society,” said the minister.

This year’s celebrations are significant as they coincide with the 30th anniversary of the 1995 Beijing Declaration on gender equality at a conference chaired by veteran Tanzanian politician, Mrs. Gertrude Mongella.

International Women’s Day also aims to address specific challenges, such as the high rates of female genital mutilation in Arusha, Mara, and Kilimanjaro regions, underscoring the need for continued efforts in tackling gender-related issues.

Arusha Regional Commissioner (RC), Mr. Paul Makonda, who also attended the press briefing, assured the public and guests of tight security, safety, and comfort during the week-long celebrations.
