10-year-old Arusha boy sets climbing record

I n a remarkable feat of endurance and courage, 10-year-old Anwaar Njiku from Njiro, Arusha Region, has set a new record as the youngest person to summit Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest peak in Africa. Anwaar reached the summit on January 5, 2025, concluding an ambitious eight-day trek that began on December 29, 2024. He navigated the mountain’s rigorous Lemosho Route and descended via the Mweka Route. His journey was marked by challenging altitude changes and diverse climatic conditions— from lush rainforests to barren alpine deserts, culminating in the frigid arctic zone at the peak. The young mountaineer was part of an expedition that included 10 international tourists, with his father, Athuman Njiku, by his side providing support throughout the challenging climb. This extraordinary venture was organised to celebrate Anwaar’s birthday, making it a memorable milestone in his young life
